St. George, UT (October 23, 2026) – Two drivers were hospitalized Thursday, October 22, after a car crossed the median near milepost 13 on Interstate 15.
The Utah Highway Patrol said a 31-year-old man was behind the wheel of a 2007 Buick Rainier heading south when it entered northbound traffic.
The Buick hit a 2021 Toyota Tacoma in the inside northbound lane. A 51-year-old woman was driving the Tacoma. The Buick then sideswiped a fuel tanker in the No. 2 lane.
The tanker's driver was not hurt. Both the Buick and Tacoma drivers were taken to the hospital, where police listed the Buick's driver as serious and the Tacoma's driver as very serious.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Our thoughts are with both drivers as they recover.
Does Utah's No-Fault Rule Limit Lawsuits in St. George, UT?
Utah's no-fault system pays certain medical costs through a person's own personal injury protection, but it does not bar every lawsuit. An injured person can generally sue the at-fault driver for pain and suffering only after meeting a threshold, such as more than $3,000 in medical expenses, permanent disability or impairment, permanent disfigurement, dismemberment, or death.
The first layer of coverage is personal injury protection, which Utah drivers must carry at $3,000 per person at minimum, and the bills it pays generally count toward the threshold. Once the threshold is met, a claim generally goes against the at-fault driver's liability policy, which must offer at least $30,000 per person and $65,000 for all injured people.
Proving the threshold is rarely automatic. Insurers may question whether treatment was reasonable, whether an injury is permanent, or whether a gap in appointments points to another cause.
Medical findings that line up with the statute's categories carry weight, and a car accident lawyer can spot gaps early, which is easier when bills, reports, and physician notes are kept together from the start.
