According to early reports from the The Utah Department of Transportation, at least one person was seriously injured.

Northbound I-15 was closed at Washington Parkway. Transportation officials expected the road to clear around 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected as they receive medical care.

What Happens When Several Drivers Share Fault in Washington City, UT?

When several drivers share fault, Utah law assigns each one a percentage of responsibility, and each party generally pays only its own share. This is known as several liability. Utah moved away from the older rule that let an injured person collect the full amount from any one at-fault party.

That makes it worthwhile to identify every possible party early, especially on busy corridors. Utah's rules can allow fault to be assigned to a party who is not named in the lawsuit. Drivers, vehicle owners, the employer of a commercial driver, or a company responsible for road maintenance may each be examined, depending on the facts.

Each driver may carry a different policy with different limits, so one claim can involve several insurers at once. Event data recorders, dash camera video, and photos of where vehicles came to rest can help show who did what and in what order.

Insurers may each point toward another driver, which is why people usually ask a car accident lawyer to sort out that sequence and notify each insurer in a way that keeps their options open.

If several drivers were involved in your accident, it helps to understand how Utah divides responsibility before you talk with insurers. At Cutt, Kendell & Olson Attorneys at Law, we can explain how several liability works in a claim with more than one party and how it may relate to your specific case.
