Cow in Roadway Leads to Critical Crash on US 89/91

Logan, UT (October 23, 2026) – A man driving a Dodge pickup truck was taken to a hospital in critical condition after he hit a cow on US 89/91 near 2600 South around 2:30 a.m. The cow died, and the driver had minor injuries at that point.

The pickup was left disabled in the roadway. Logan Police said the road was dark when a semi-truck hit the pickup broadside, and the collision pushed it into a ditch.

Emergency units had to pull the driver from the truck. He was taken to a hospital in Logan, then flown to another hospital for treatment. US 89/91 was closed for about four hours and has since reopened.

Police are still working to learn more about the wreck.

Our thoughts are with the driver as he recovers.

Employer Liability in Commercial Truck Claims in Logan, UT

When a commercial truck injures someone, responsibility usually reaches past the driver. Under Utah law, an employer can be held responsible for a driver's negligence when the driver was working within the scope of the job.

A trucking company may also face claims for its own conduct, such as negligent hiring, weak training, or poor maintenance. Depending on the facts, a vehicle owner or a company that loaded the cargo may be involved too.

Federal trucking rules create a paper trail that can matter in these claims. Drivers of large commercial trucks must follow hours-of-service limits, and most record their time with electronic logging devices. Inspection reports, maintenance files, driver qualification records, and onboard data can show whether a company followed those rules. Some of these records may be kept for as little as six months.

Utah's comparative fault rule bars recovery for a person 50 percent or more at fault, and each defendant generally pays only their own share of fault. Naming every responsible party can therefore affect what is available, and a truck accident lawyer can send a preservation letter asking a company to keep logs and onboard data before routine deletion begins.
