How No-Fault Coverage Works for Pedestrians in South Salt Lake, UT

Utah is a no-fault insurance state, so medical bills after a vehicle hits a pedestrian are generally handled first through personal injury protection, or PIP, coverage.

Utah requires drivers to carry at least $3,000 in PIP. A pedestrian's claim may fall under their own policy, a household relative's policy, or the policy covering the vehicle involved, and which one applies often depends on facts that are not obvious at first.

That first layer of coverage can run out quickly. A hospital stay after an injury can pass $3,000 in a short time. PIP can also help with some lost income and other limited expenses. Insurers may ask for detailed bills and treatment records before paying, so keeping them organized matters.

Utah also sets a threshold for suing the driver. A person can generally bring that claim once medical expenses exceed $3,000 or the injury involves permanent disability, permanent disfigurement, dismemberment, or death.

Liability coverage may be the next source of compensation, with Utah's minimum set at $25,000 per person and $65,000 per accident, and underinsured motorist coverage can matter when the driver's policy is too small. These layers interact, which is why many people ask a pedestrian accident lawyer in Salt Lake to map out which coverage applies and in what order.
