School Bus Crash Kills Motorcyclist on SR-56 in Cedar City, UT

Cedar City, UT (October 6, 2026) – A motorcyclist died in a collision with a school bus on State Route 56 near Lund Highway in Cedar City on Monday morning, October 5.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the school bus was traveling west on SR-56 when its driver attempted to turn left on a yellow-arrow traffic signal in front of an eastbound motorcycle. The front of the bus struck the motorcycle, and the rider died at the scene.

The cause of the wreck remains under investigation.

We extend our condolences to the rider’s family and loved ones.

Who Can File a Wrongful Death Claim in Cedar City, UT?

In Cedar City and throughout Utah, a wrongful death claim can be filed by the person’s heirs or the personal representative of the estate on their behalf.

Under Utah law, heirs generally include the spouse, children, and parents, along with certain dependents, such as stepchildren who relied on the person financially. This rule identifies who may share in the family’s recovery.

In most cases, the family brings one claim together rather than filing separate wrongful death lawsuits. Any recovery is then shared among the eligible heirs.

Depending on the family’s losses, compensation may include lost financial support, funeral expenses, and the loss of love and companionship. These damages reflect both financial and personal losses caused by the death.

Beyond the wrongful death claim, the estate may bring a survival claim for losses the person experienced before death. These may include medical expenses or other losses connected to the period before death.

For wrongful death claims, families generally have two years from the date of death to file. When a claim is against a Utah governmental entity, a notice of claim generally must be filed within one year after the claim arises. Missing these deadlines can prevent the claim from moving forward.

Before any paperwork is filed, a wrongful death lawyer can explain who has the right to bring the claim under Utah law. An attorney can also handle the required documents and keep the case on track before the deadline.
