Tooele, UT (October 8, 2026) – A passenger was seriously hurt Wednesday, October 7, when two semi trucks struck each other on westbound I-80 in Tooele. That person had been riding in one of the trucks and was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
One semi was trying to merge onto the interstate when it hit the other, the Utah Highway Patrol said. Both trucks ended up off the north shoulder, and debris was scattered across the road.
A large cut on the thigh led emergency units to call for a tourniquet. A medical helicopter was first requested, but a ground ambulance made the trip to the hospital.
The investigation into the wreck remains ongoing.
We wish the injured person a strong recovery.
Why Work Status Matters for Truck Passengers in Tooele, UT
In Utah, a person injured while riding in a commercial truck usually has more than one possible path to compensation, and which one applies can depend on the person's relationship to the trucking company.
A passenger who is also an employee, such as a co-driver or trainee, is generally covered by workers' compensation for a job-related injury. That system typically provides benefits regardless of fault, but it generally prevents a lawsuit against the employer.
Workers' compensation does not always end the discussion, though. Utah generally allows an injured worker to pursue a separate claim against a third party whose negligence helped cause the harm, such as the driver or company behind another vehicle.
A passenger with no work connection to either truck may instead have claims against any driver whose negligence contributed, and Utah generally limits each at-fault party to its own share of the blame.
Time limits differ by claim type. Utah generally allows four years to file a personal injury lawsuit against a negligent third party, while workers' compensation has its own notice and filing requirements that can be shorter. A truck accident lawyer can help sort out which claims are available, how a workers' compensation claim may interact with a third-party claim, and which deadline comes first.
At Cutt, Kendell & Olson Attorneys at Law, we are open to talk with Utah residents about how a claim may work when a passenger was injured on a work-related truck trip. We can explain how workers' compensation and a third-party claim may fit together, and which deadlines may apply to each.
