Who Must Yield When a Driver Turns Left Across Oncoming Traffic in Sandy, UT?
Under Utah law, a driver who turns left must yield to oncoming vehicles that are close enough to create an immediate hazard. That duty applies to motorcycles just as it does to cars and trucks. Even so, fault can still be shared, because speed, visibility, and the timing of the turn can all be disputed.
Disagreements tend to center on what counts as an immediate hazard. Drivers sometimes say they did not see a motorcycle, whose narrow profile can make distance and speed harder to judge.
Under Utah's modified comparative fault rule, a claimant found 50 percent or more at fault cannot recover, and a lower percentage reduces damages. This is exactly why arguments about speed or lane position matter so much.
Busy left-turn lanes along busy corridors leave little time for drivers to judge gaps in oncoming traffic. Business camera footage, vehicle data, skid marks, and witness statements can help establish speed and timing, but some of that material disappears quickly. A motorcycle accident lawyer can gather and preserve that evidence and consult a reconstruction specialist when appropriate.
