How Does Utah Law Classify E-Bikes and Their Riders in St. George, UT?
Utah law generally treats an electric-assisted bicycle like a regular bicycle, with three classes based on how the motor works and how fast it assists. Class 1 and Class 2 models assist up to 20 mph, and Class 3 models assist up to 28 mph. Riders in each class are generally subject to the traffic rules that apply to bicycles.
Those classes matter because they affect which rules apply on the road. Utah drivers who pass a bicycle must generally leave a safe distance of at least three feet, and drivers also owe a general duty of reasonable care to other road users.
Classification can also shape how an insurer evaluates a claim and which records matter. Insurers may ask which class the e-bike falls into, whether the motor was altered, and how fast the rider could travel.
In these cases, it is important to keep the purchase receipt, the manufacturer's label, battery and controller information, and any ride-app data to help answer those questions. Utah generally allows four years to file most personal injury lawsuits, though shorter notice deadlines can apply when a government entity is involved, and a bicycle accident lawyer can review which timeline fits.
