How No-Fault Insurance Works for Injured Drivers in St George, UT

Utah is a no-fault state. This means auto policies must include personal injury protection (PIP) with at least $3,000 in benefits per person. These benefits generally pay medical bills and some related losses no matter who caused the accident, so an injured driver usually starts with their own insurer.

Going beyond those benefits is a separate step. In general, a person can pursue the at-fault driver for additional damages only after meeting a threshold, such as more than $3,000 in medical expenses or a qualifying injury like a fracture, permanent impairment, or disability. Whether that threshold is met depends on the medical records, which is why treatment bills and doctor's notes matter early on.

However, PIP limits can run out quickly after a serious injury, and insurers may question whether treatment was related to the accident. To make the process easier, a car accident lawyer can review the policy, track how close a claim is to the threshold, and organize bills and records before a claim moves past no-fault benefits.
