Passenger Killed in Vehicle Wreck on I-80 Near Summit Co., UT

Fatal accident in Utah

Summit County, UT (June 1, 2026) – A passenger was killed Sunday morning, May 31, after an SUV left Interstate 80 and rolled over. Emergency crews responded to the westbound side of the highway around 11:30 a.m.

According to initial reports, a Nissan Rogue traveling westbound veered off the road, overturned, and crashed into a concrete irrigation ditch. The front-seat passenger suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and a passenger in the back seat were critically injured and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities have not released the names or ages of those involved.

Investigators are still working to determine what led to the wreck.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the person who lost their life in this tragic crash, and we wish the injured victims a full recovery.

How Does a Passenger File a Personal Injury Claim in Utah?

An injured passenger may be able to file a personal injury claim against the insurance policy of the driver responsible for the crash. In Utah, passengers are generally considered blameless in single-vehicle accidents and may seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and other related losses.

Because Utah follows a no-fault insurance system, a passenger's initial medical costs are often covered through personal injury protection (PIP) benefits. However, if the injuries meet Utah's legal threshold, additional compensation may be available through the at-fault driver's bodily injury liability coverage.

Vehicle crashes often result in severe injuries, especially when a vehicle leaves the roadway and rolls over, like in this case. Survivors may suffer traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, broken bones, internal injuries, and other serious conditions that require extensive medical care.

In many cases, recovery involves lengthy hospital stays, multiple procedures, rehabilitation, and ongoing treatment, creating significant financial and emotional burdens for injured passengers and their families.

Given the potential severity of these cases, preserving evidence early can be important. Vehicle data, crash reports, witness statements, and other evidence may help establish how the collision occurred and who is responsible.

An attorney can assist by gathering records, reviewing available evidence, and communicating with insurance companies on the passenger's behalf. Legal guidance can help injured individuals better understand their options and pursue the compensation they may need to recover and move forward.
