Utah Co., UT — Motorcyclist Struck and Killed on Hwy 6

Fatal accident in Utah

Utah County, UT (May 12, 2026) — A mechanical failure turned tragic late Sunday night, May 10, when a motorcyclist was struck and killed on Highway 6. The Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) responded to the fatal collision approximately 13 miles east of Santaquin shortly after 10:00 p.m.

According to UHP Sgt. Luis Silva, a 46-year-old man, had stopped his motorcycle in the far-right westbound lane after experiencing mechanical issues. While the motorcycle was stationary, a westbound passenger car struck the rider.

The impact resulted in fatal injuries for the motorcyclist, who was pronounced dead at the scene. A second individual riding on the motorcycle was remarkably uninjured.

The driver and passenger of the car involved sustained only minor injuries and were evaluated by medical personnel.

The investigation remains active.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Luis Silva during this difficult time.

How Does Utah’s No-Fault System Impact a Fatal Motorcycle Accident Claim?

In Utah, motor vehicle accidents are governed by a No-Fault system that requires specific insurance coverages to pay for immediate expenses. However, motorcycle accidents are often an exception to these rules, creating a complex legal landscape for survivors.

To protect your rights, you must determine if the motorcycle was covered by Personal Injury Protection (PIP), identify the liability limits of the driver who struck the disabled bike, and consult a professional to ensure that the unique insurance statutes for Utah riders do not prevent your family from seeking full compensation.

Unlike passenger cars, Utah law does not mandate Personal Injury Protection (PIP) for motorcycles; it is an optional coverage that many riders do not have. This is a mechanical necessity for the family to understand because, without PIP, there is no no-fault bucket of money to cover immediate funeral or medical costs.

In Utah, you can typically only sue the at-fault driver if your medical expenses exceed $3,000 or if the accident results in permanent impairment or death. If a collision was fatal, the Tort Threshold is automatically met. This grants the family the legal right to bypass the no-fault restrictions and pursue the driver for the full value of the loss, including non-economic damages like pain, suffering, and loss of companionship that a standard insurance check would never cover.

If the driver who struck the motorcyclist has low insurance limits (Utah’s minimum is only $25,000 per person), the recovery may be insufficient for a wrongful death. You have the right to check if the victim had Underinsured Motorist (UIM) coverage on his own policy. In Utah, UIM follows the person, not just the vehicle, and can be a vital resource for the family.
