Salt Lake City, UT (August 3, 2026) – Two people sustained critical injuries after a vehicle crashed into a tree following a brief police pursuit in Salt Lake City early Sunday morning, August 2.
According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, the incident began around 1:40 a.m. after a motorcycle officer initiated a traffic stop near 450 West and 400 South. Police said the driver attempted to flee, striking the officer while leaving the scene.
Officers briefly pursued the vehicle until it crashed into a tree near 175 South and 500 West. Authorities said the vehicle caught fire after the collision. Officers extinguished the flames, and the driver exited the vehicle, while the passenger had to be extricated by firefighters.
Both occupants were transported to a hospital with critical injuries.
Police said the officer did not suffer significant injuries. The driver is expected to be booked into jail after being released from the hospital.
