Fatal Three-Vehicle Collision on U.S. 191 in Moab, UT

Fatal Three-Vehicle Collision on U.S. 191 in Moab, UT

Moab, UT (August 17, 2026) – One person lost their life on Friday, August 14, in a multi-vehicle collision along U.S. Route 191 near Moab.

According to Utah Highway Patrol, a Ford Escape was traveling southbound when, for reasons still under investigation, the SUV drifted across the center line. The Escape collided with a southbound Ford F550 truck that was towing three Ram Sprinter vans.

Following the initial impact, the Ford Escape spun out of control and came to rest in the northbound travel lanes, where it was subsequently clipped by an oncoming northbound commercial vehicle.

Emergency medical personnel evaluated those involved at the scene. The driver of the Ford Escape sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.

How Do Commercial Vehicle Regulations Affect Accident Liability in Moab, UT?

Commercial vehicle regulations affect accident liability in Utah by establishing strict federal and state safety standards, such as driver hour limits and maintenance rules, that, when violated, serve as key legal evidence to prove negligence against both the driver and the trucking company under Utah liability laws.

Commercial motor carriers operating in Utah must follow Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) regulations. These strict laws govern driver rest periods, vehicle maintenance schedules, weight limits, and cargo securing practices.

Following a crash, investigators analyze whether regulatory breaches occurred. Under Utah law, if a fleet operator or driver failed to maintain equipment, exceeded hours-of-service limits, or operated an overloaded vehicle, these violations establish a failure to meet the required duty of care.

Consequently, victims or surviving family members can hold both the driver and the trucking company financially responsible for resulting injuries or loss of life.

Investigating commercial collisions requires prompt legal action to preserve vital corporate records before evidence is routinely overwritten. Key proof includes electronic control module (ECM) black box data, driver logbooks, qualification files, maintenance records, and Utah Highway Patrol reconstruction findings.
